FUNCTIONS
BETS COLLECTING AND VALIDATION
Bet Collecting

Games can be inserted by means of optically reading the tickets, using the keyboard or the touch screen (optional).
The 7.5" display, available both in color and monochromatic, offers graphic characteristics (640x480) that are compatible with those of larger-sized terminals and permit the use of the terminal in advanced computer architectures.

The high-resolution scanner, specifically designed by Olivetti Tecnost, rapidly (in less than a second) and correctly reads the tickets filled in by the players.

The characteristics of the hardware and software are such that they ensure the proper handling of any gaming document (ticket or game receipt) and the exact recognition of marks and bar codes, as well as direct acquisition of images to be filed (for example, signatures, addresses, etc.).

Visualization for Client

The terminal may be equipped with a display for information to the client: amount to pay, information relating to the game (i.e results of drawings) or promotional information.

The display on the client side is available in different models: from the smaller versions that only show the amount to be paid to the larger versions, that can also be used for promotions and advertising.

In the more compact version, the optional display is incorporated in the terminal, while the removable models are equipped with a practical hooking method to adapt the installation to the point-of-sale.

Bet validation (printing of the receipt)

For printing the receipt, a thermal printer and cutter is incorporated in the MAEL 205.

  • The printer is speedy (less than one second for printing a receipt).
  • Prints images and logotypes thanks to advanced graphic characteristics and memory (1 MByte)
  • It is equipped with a control system for data transmitted with the game terminal to ensure data integrity.
  • Paper insertion is very simple since the operator can choose from a semi-automatic or manual mode.
  • No ink cartridges are necessary.

EXTRA-GAMING SERVICES
  • Reloading of pre-paid telephone cards
  • Payment of utilities and taxes
  • Reservations and tickets for cultural and sporting events

Use of the games sales network to provide other services, generates extraordinary synergies that attract a new clientele to the outlets and new forms of income for the Organization and for the points-of-sale themselves.

The Olivetti Tecnost terminals have been used for years for these functions and the new MAEL 380 and MAEL 205 products have been carefully planned for these services:

Complete HW and SW compatibility with software applications already created for ordinary networked PCs:

  • standard operating systems and software (Linux and Windows family)
  • compatible operator/terminal interface (display, keyboard and touch screen)
  • most commonly used communication protocols (TCP/IP and X25).

Powerful integrated optical scanner to speed-up data acquisition:

  • any type of code (mark, bar code and, in the case of MAEL 380, OCR characters)
  • any format (up to A4 format in the case of MAEL 380, for documents as wide as a coupon/ticket for MAEL 205).

Availability of:

  • ports to connect additional devices (A4 format printer, second and third displays for the public)
  • memory supports compatible with software applications (large capacity hard disk)
  • secure identification devices (smart card scanners)
  • SAM (Security Access Module) for access to the network with special security requirements.

WINNING VERIFICATION

At the end of a game, it is possible to verify, through the terminal, if a gaming receipt is a winning receipt.

  • The operator inserts the receipt in the coupon/ticket scanner.
  • The terminal scans the receipt and sends the information to the central system.
  • The central system verifies the gaming data and transmits the result to the terminal.
  • The coupon/ticket is expelled and may be annulled ("branding" option).
  • The result of the verification is visualized on the terminal.

A win may also be verified through a special terminal, the MAEL 901, which allows the player to operate in self-service mode.

INSTANT LOTTERY VALIDATION

The terminal has been designed for management of instant lotteries and to allow verification of the winnings from scratch tickets.
A special (optional) bar code scanner is foreseen for this purpose which can be integrated in the terminal or be self-standing, equipped with ergonomic hand grip.

The integrated version reduces the space occupied by the terminal to a minimum.

The external version allows the scanner to be used also to read codes on large packages or objects that cannot easily be moved near the terminal.

ACCOUNTING

MAEL 380 and MAEL 205 terminals have been designed to manage a complete set of accountancy functions for point-of-sale.

In the on-line systems these functions are closely linked to the information made available by the central Lottery system.

In the case of Olivetti GamingWare solution, and therefore use of central MAEL GATEASY software, numerous accounting reports are available on the terminal. These reports summarize:

  • income
  • winnings paid out
  • cancelled bets (if this is foreseen)
  • cash balance
  • balance to be paid to the Central Organization

The statements of account may be generated at various aggregate levels:

  • by unit of responsibility
  • by area manager (several outlets)
  • by point-of-sale (comprising several terminals)
  • by terminal
  • by operator
  • by type of game
  • by timeframe (daily or over a specific period of time)

Information may be visualized on the display and printed out on the ordinary receipt printer.

SECURE IDENTIFICATION AND ELECTRONIC PAYMENT
Secure identification

The MAEL 380 and MAEL 205 terminals may be used only by authorized personnel: operators at the point-of-sale and technical assistance staff.

Management of the terminals may be through password controls or, in a more technologically secure manner, by means of smart cards distributed to authorized personnel.

In both cases, the software defines different levels of responsibility among terminal operators, authorizes execution of specific functions only by certain people, and keeps track of the operations carried out by individuals.

Electronic payments and fidelity cards

In order to offer a high level of service to regular players, the terminal provides the possibility of managing payments through bank cards or pre-paid cards.

Management of these cards also allows promotional functions to be activated aimed at regular players, in order to record different gaming tendencies and memorize the standard games of each individual player.

Several options cover the entire range of possible requirements typical of each payment circuit:

  • smart card ISO7816 and magnetic badge scanner;
  • pin-pad for insertion of a secret code by the Client;
  • Security Access Module (SAM) for access to special telematic circuits.

ADVERTISING AND INFORMATION

Every Lottery aims at promoting new games and reaching new clients.

The terminals installed at the point-of-sale constitute a permanently available, economic means of exceptional communication possibilities towards a Lottery-orientated public.

The MAEL terminals have been designed to implement a series of options aimed at encouraging this type of activity:

  • a powerful processor able to guarantee simultaneous management of ordinary games functions and marketing activities;
  • connection of a second large-sized display/monitor;
  • integrated high-capacity hard disk (and, in the MAEL 380, a CD/DVD-ROM scanner) to store films, images and data which are updated during low-peak periods of the communication line.

ON-LINE TRAINING

For Olivetti, the games terminal is an integral part of the training system for operator at point-of-sale.

The frequent introduction of new games, new services and the opening of new points-of-sale call for a continuous training system that must be managed in a functional and economical manner and which complements the traditional operating and training systems (forming part of the services offered by Olivetti Tecnost) that are more suited to the start-up of an entire system.

The MAEL 380 and MAEL 205 terminals are equipped with training and help functions, integrated in the terminal software and updated through the communication network, that can be used in the configurations with higher processing capacities.
